Cenozoic exhumation patterns in the northern Andes: Constraints from the southern Bucaramanga Fault, Eastern Cordillera, Colombia

چکیده

The left lateral strike-slip Bucaramanga Fault exhibits a transpressional southern termination located towards the axial zone of Eastern Cordillera Colombia, where Boyacá and Soapaga Faults are also identified as inversion-related structures. To unravel their exhumation history, we obtained apatite zircon: fission-track (U–Th)/He ages from samples collected along different structural domains, five vertical profiles. Joint Bayesian inverse modeling these data reveals at least four episodes cooling. These are: (i) 50 ± 5 Ma, (ii) 20 (iii) 12 3 (iv) Ma. earliest pulse is associated with reactivation Faults. second related to transpressive coincides marked increase in relief. Miocene-Pliocene pulses reactivation. Older previously reported other areas Santander Massif suggest migration north south. cooling this study can be related, within broader geodynamic context, interaction between Cocos, Nazca, Caribbean, South American plates, accretion large tectonic domains affinity (oceanic or continental) against plate during Cenozoic. Our results consistent previous work Massif. observed in-situ correspond found modern river sediments support relief development Eocene present.

Late Cenozoic uplift of the Eastern Cordillera, Bolivian Andes

This paper analyses Late Cenozoic uplift in the Bolivian Andes, using the morphology of well preserved regional paleosurfaces in the Eastern Cordillera that define three axially draining braided river catchments that formed between ∼12 and ∼9 Ma. Rock uplift since the formation of the paleodrainage systems, which has been quantified using four different methods, is 1705±695 m, with a mean erosi...

Revised deformation history of the central Andes: Inferences from Cenozoic foredeep and intermontane basins of the Eastern Cordillera, Bolivia

[1] Investigation of Cenozoic deformation, sediment accumulation, and provenance in the Eastern Cordillera of Bolivia at 17–21 S indicates major shortening (60–140 km) and foredeep development followed by limited internal shortening and intermontane basin development. Contrasting histories of shortening, deposition, sediment dispersal, and detrital composition distinguish a formerly extensive P...

Geological Society of America Bulletin Orogenic wedge advance in the northern Andes: Evidence from the Oligocene-Miocene sedimentary record of the Medina Basin, Eastern Cordillera, Colombia

Foreland basin development in the Andes of central Colombia has been suggested to have started in the Late Cretaceous through tectonic loading of the Central Cordillera. Eastward migration of the Cenozoic orogenic front has also been inferred from the foreland basin record west of the Eastern Cordillera. However, farther east, limited data provided by foreland basin strata and the adjacent East...

DNA Barcoding Survey of Anurans across the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia and the Impact of the Andes on Cryptic Diversity

Colombia hosts the second highest amphibian species diversity on Earth, yet its fauna remains poorly studied, especially using molecular genetic techniques. We present the results of the first wide-scale DNA barcoding survey of anurans of Colombia, focusing on a transect across the Eastern Cordillera. We surveyed 10 sites between the Magdalena Valley to the west and the eastern foothills of the...
